Inserito in un vecchio deposito di legname nel centro storico di Albuquerque, il Sawmill Market dello studio Islyn nasce come primo foodhall della città, conosciuta sopratutto per il chili, la root beer e Breaking Bad. I circa 3700 mq di volumetria contengono zone ristoro, cocktail bar nascosti, serre, cucine di prova e dimostrative, ristoranti multietnici, ma anche market a km 0, spazi coworking e pop-up shop. Questa ecletticità, che rispecchia gli abitanti, si riflette anche sul design stesso che, usando il magazzino della metà del secolo scorso come base architettonica, accosta riferimenti sulla storia del sito  (come le travi a vista, i binari storici e il legno brunito) a materiali moderni come il cemento colato per la pavimentazione, o le grandi porte vetrate, con  un’ottima visuale verso l’area esterna che comprende una zona pic-nic trasformabile all’occorrenza in un cinema all’aperto. La disposizione flessibile degli spazi richiama le postazioni commerciali di tradizione Navajo, mentre tra i materiali, sono stati intrecciati elementi del patrimonio storico e dell’artigianato indigeno: piastrelle naturali fatte a mano, pelle di sella e strati di terra e organici che servono come omaggio a quella che i progettisti definiscono una moderna interpretazione della storia del New Mexico.

Inserted in an old lumber yard in the historic center of Albuquerque, the Sawmill Market of Islyn studio is first food hall of the city, known above all for chili, root beer and Breaking Bad. The approximately 3700 sqm of volume contains refreshment areas, hidden cocktail bars, greenhouses, test and demonstration kitchens, multi-ethnic restaurants, but also km 0 markets, co-working spaces and pop-up shops. This eclecticism, that reflects the inhabitants, also reflects on the design itself that, using the warehouse from the middle of the last century as the architectural base, juxtaposes the history of the site (like the exposed beams, historic tracks and burnished wood) with modern materials like the poured concrete for the flooring, or the large glass doors, with an excellent view of the external area that includes a picnic area, convertible, if necessary, into an outdoor cinema. The flexible arrangement of the spaces recalls the commercial stations of Navajo tradition, while among the materials, elements of historical heritage and indigenous craftsmanship have been intertwined: natural handmade tiles, saddle leather and organic and earth layers that serve as a tribute to what the designers call a modern interpretation of New Mexico history.
